HISTROM for all: Horse-Lovers
Saddle Up! We’re on letter H of my HISTROM for All series meant to completely overwhelm your friends with book suggestions and grow your TBR out of control.
Reading historical romance has made me appreciate horses in a whole new light. Just learning about the importance and care of horses in various historical times is fascinating, but some authors take it to another level. Here are four books that had me think maybe I could be a horse girly too.
One Dance with a Duke by Tessa Dare
Spencer, the Duke of Morland, lives and breathes horses. He established and runs a successful stud farm and is a member of the Stud Club. This club gives members rights to breed mares to Osirus, a prime example of a stud horse, as long as they have a special coin. However, the murder of one of their members and the pursuit of the coin brings Spencer into a quick marriage with Amelia, a wallflower who dreams of hosting in her own home. They find common ground as Spencer shares his passion for horses with her.
The Siren of Sussex by Mimi Matthews
At 23, Evelyn arrived to London to participate in her first season. She must make an advantageous match to support her younger sisters, as well as finance the keeping of her magnificent stallion. While she may feel unsure in the ballroom, she knows she is a confident equestrienne. She decides that she will make her debut on horseback. Evelyn knows that to make an impression, she will need the assistance of Ahmad, London’s most talented habit maker. As she frequents Rotten Row, she makes a small group of horse-loving friends.
Daring with a Duke by Lizzie C Koa
Lady Felicity wants to be free from a betrothal with her unfaithful fiancé, but her family refuses to end the agreement. So, she takes matters into her own hands with a plan to seduce her fiancé’s father. Ashley, the Duke of Devonford, is an honorable, reclusive hunk of a man who refuses her initial advances. He enjoys a country life raising his daughter and rehabilitating horses. A quiet observer, he has an uncanny ability to understand horses and people. While Felicity’s departure is delayed from his estate giving her extra time to complete her plan, she gets quite a show watching him work with the horses.
The Trouble with Anna by Rachel Griffiths
Anna Barton would rather spend an afternoon with horses instead of people, with the exception of her best friend, Lady Charlotte. She knows her grandfather’s estate, horses, and stables like the back of her hand and has big plans for them once she inherits. However, a condition of his will prevents her from inheriting, unless she marries Lord Ramsey, her best friend’s brother. Determined not to lose it all, she she uses her knowledge of horse racing to start a betting ring, and even ends up in her own horse race.
